My name is Claire Kisamore, and I was born and raised in West Virginia. As a teenager, the sacred Appalachian pastime of deer hunting first peaked my interest in biology. I attended West Virginia University where I earned a Bachelors of Science in Immunology and Medical Microbiology. Basically, I studied the germs that can make us sick and how our bodies fight against them. I am currently pursuing a PhD in immunology, and I created this blog as a way to give back to the mountain communities in which I grew up.
My passion is science writing and communication. As an Appalachian, I know that we are often overlooked and misunderstood, especially when it comes to "scholarly" topics such as health and medicine. My goal is to bridge the gap between experts and lay people when it comes to information about health issues and new discoveries. I believe that scientific knowledge should be accessible to everyone (like, you know, the taxpayers who fund a lot of medical research)!
When I'm not in the lab or writing, you can probably find me at home playing with my cats Percy, Winston, and Olive, or reading a book. I'm a huge Stephen King fan, and I'm currently working on reading all of his books! I'm married to my my best friend and better half, Caleb. We met working in the same lab as undergraduates at WVU.
